German Chocolate Cake Recipe

There is nothing better than a mouth watering piece of chocolate cake with coconut and roasted pecan frosting.

Coconut Pecan Filling and Frosting

1 cup
1 cup
3
1/2 cup
1 tsp
1 1/3 cup
1 cup
German sweet chocolate
Boiling water
Butter
Sugar
Egg yolks
Egg whites, stiffly beaten
Vanilla
Flour
Baking soda
Salt
Buttermilk



Evaporated milk
Sugar
Egg yolks
Butter
Vanilla
Coconut
Chopped roasted pecans

Oven Temp ~ 350°
Recipe Bake Time ~ 30 - 35 minutes
Pan Type ~ Three 9 inch round pans


Preheat oven, spray pan with non-stick spray and line pans with parchment paper.

Melt chocolate in boiling water. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy, add egg yolks, vanilla, and chocolate.
Add dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk.
Fold in egg whites.

Pour into three prepared pans.
Bake.

Frost the top of each layer of German Chocolate cake with Coconut Pecan Frosting, leaving sides unfrosted.

Coconut Pecan Filling and Frosting

Combine all ingredients except coconut and pecans in a saucepan.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, about 12 minutes.
When mixture thickens, remove from heat.

The secret to the delicious flavor of German Chocolate Cake is the roasted pecans.
Put one cup of pecans in the microwave for one minute.
Remove them and turn each one over with your hand and put them back in for another minute.
The second time you take them out if they don't look done put them in for another minute.
When done remove from microwave and chop each nut into quarters.

Stir in coconut and pecans.
Cool until spreadable.
